marTIN CONRADI
COMPUTER GRAPHICS ENTREPRENEUR
Martin Conradi is British; after an early career in advertising and marketing in London, set up his own computer graphics business there in 1981. In 1993 he met John Redfern at a computer conference and was deeply impressed by his innovative animation of Harrison’s H1. After John’s death in 2019 it became clear that his website was in danger of closing and the body of his work scattered and eventually lost. Martin felt his work was important and volunteered to bring as much as possible of John’s work together from the various museums, collectors and individuals who had commissioned his animations. He also wanted to reflect Redfern’s ethos as a teacher – as Redfern himself wrote: ”For me, the challenge is to explain complicated mechanisms and principles so that they can be understood by viewers of all ages and abilities, yet be enjoyed by the expert.” Martin has been hugely helped in this endeavour by Philip Whyte and his colleagues at Frodsham, by Will Andrewes, Jonathan Betts and numerous others. There can be few people who have had such an extraordinary level of support and encouragement for such an undertaking, which in itself underlines the importance of Redfern’s work.
